Walk Mill

Walk Mill, Walk Mill Ln, Waverton, Chester CH3 7BF, UK – 01829 749373

Average. Small portions and un-buttered toast. Cheese and tomato sandwich - cheese was standard supermarket stuff; I'd expect a little more for the price, and the two small rolls. Staff were great; very polite and courteous.

Lovely old water mill that makes its own stone ground flour with a cafe attached. Sounds ace doesn't it? The menu is small. Very small. Soup, sandwiches or cake. There's a selection of drinks. Of the three types of sandwiches on offer I reluctantly went for the cheese and tomato option, but it seemed the best there as I thought I may get some lovely farmhouse artisan cheese as they cost the best part of a fiver for a sandwich. I was so excited ... ha.. false hopes or what! But they did tell me I could have it warm if I wanted. Now that's novel isn't it? £18 later I got two cups of tea, two sandwiches and two pieces of cake. Quite pricey for this area so I was expecting something wonderful. It's a real shame they don't know how to make good bread with that lovely flour they mill. Or even a good sandwich for that matter. The bread was heavier than clay almost and if I didn't know better I could easily been mistaken that they'd missed the cheese off my sandwich, it was a single wafer thin slice...i takes real knife skills to get cheese that thin, it's a shame those kitchen skills aren't put to good use elsewhere. The sponge cake was as dry as a bone, but the carrot cake was really good, I think they used oil in the carrot cake instread of butter and that kept the mix nice and moist. The soup had sold out at just a few moments past noon, so I guess you have to get their early to try that, or perhaps all the customers had tried the sandwiches in the past and wisely decided to opt for the soup and a roll. The main building has numerous entrances and exits, none of which are signposted but it's got a lovely feel to the building and the countryside surroundings make the location very special. If you've walked into the location from the countryside then it's easy not to notice that this place offers some food and drink, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if you did miss it... I think I'm going to choose a country pub in future for lunch, but you never know I may nip back in a year or so to see if things have improved. In summary.. small menu. Nice flour, bad bread, slightly over priced.
